Greetings all! 

            Can you think of any other season so welcome as spring? Do you find yourself wanting to help push daffodils out of the ground or whispering “ah” at the first violet? Spring is my favorite season, but I feel we need all four. I like to think of spring as a time for renewal, summer for fun, fall for preparation, and winter for rest and contemplation. We’re so blessed in Tennessee to have all four.

            The question we get asked most when speaking of herbs is “Why can’t I grow cilantro?” Don’t feel bad, you’re not alone. One reason is cilantro doesn’t transplant well. That’s why we choose not to sell the plants. Yes, in the heat of the summer, cilantro will bolt, or go to seed. We let ours re-seed. In other words we let the white flowers turn into coriander or brown cilantro seed. When the seeds are ready they will drop to the soil and hopefully plant themselves. We had a bed of cilantro for years without replanting until we decided we didn’t need that much. We now let the plants come up wherever they want to in the garden. Cilantro is a magnet for beneficial insects. When buying seeds look for “slow bolt” varieties and plant in secession spring and summer, or let re-seed.
            The fresh leaves and flowers of cilantro can be used in salads, salsa, rice, pasta and stir fries. When cooking, add in the last few minutes. I wouldn’t recommend drying cilantro. It loses its flavor. If you find you can’t live without the flavor try this pesto. It’s really good on fish, vegetables, pasta, etc… 

Cilantro with Lemon Pesto 

2 cups cilantro
cup parsley
cup olive oil
3 Tlbs. cashews
3 garlic cloves
cup Parmesan cheese
2 Tlbs. lemon juice 

Mix all ingredients in a food processor of blender. Can be frozen in small amounts and taken out as needed. Or you could simply blend cilantro leaves with a little olive oil to make a paste and freeze. 

            As I said, when cilantro goes to seed the seed is coriander. Coriander adds a warm taste to breads, cookies, cakes, cooked fruit or marinades just to name a few. 

Susan’s Gardening Library 

            Our friends Bob and Susan Naylor left their beautiful home and amazing gardens in Maryville and moved to England! Before leaving, Susan blessed me with her extensive collection of books. We decided to share Susan’s generous gift with you. So we’ve devoted a section of the Herb Cottage to Susan Naylor’s Gardening Libarary. We don’t have the kinks worked out, but hopefully we will by opening day. 


            April 1- Spring Fever Day at Honey Rock, Saturday 10 to 5. Come get your tonic of sassafras tea, see what’s new in the greenhouse and help us celebrate a new season.

             April 22 – Maryville Farmer’s Market and Craft sale 9 to 3 in Founder’s Square in downtown Maryville. This starts out the 2017 market season every Saturday morning from 9 to sell out.           

            Greenback Farmer’s Market, Wednesdays, 9-1, at the Greenback depot. 

            The Blount County Beekeepers meet the second Monday of every month at 6:30 at the Church of Christ, Sherwood Drive in Maryville TN.                      

            June 17- Lavender Festival in Oak Ridge at the Historic Jackson Square. Saturday, 8 to 3. 

            As I mentioned before, beginning April 1st. (no foolin) we will be open Tuesday thru Saturday 10 until 5. If you can’t make it by 5 give us a call at 865-984-0954 and we’ll work something out. We always look forward to spring and seeing your smiling faces.
